This symposium concentrates on the role of coins and medals in processes of identity formation
in the past. Focus lies on three historical periods in which these media were used as important
ideological instruments: Roman Republic, Roman Empire and the Renaissance. The main
questions that will be addressed are: How can we use coins and medals to study the identities of
specific politico-geographical areas on the one hand and identities of different types of rulers on
the other hand? What do we gain from comparing coins from different periods (Antiquity and
the Renaissance), different types of rule (city states and empires) and different scales (local and
    imperial)?
Marleen Termeer (Universiteit Leiden): Colonial coinages beyond the city-state in 3rd century BC Italy
Liesbeth Claes (Universiteit van Amsterdam): Eastern usurpers or loyal vassals? Third-century
coinage as a source for imperial ambitions
Erika Manders (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen): Coins against
Christianity? Maximinus Daia's 'persecution issues' in context
Martin Hirsch (Staatliche Münzsammlung München) Die silberne
Stadt. Rom im Spiegel seiner Medaillen (1460-1660)
