Il Congresso internazionale Ecclesiae Urbis si è tenuto nell’anno 2000, nell’ambito delle celebrazioni del Giubileo dei docenti universitari. Esso ha avuto come oggetto le chiese paleocristiane e altomedievali di Roma cioè quelle fondate non oltre il X secolo, ed è stato dedicato alla memoria di Richard Krautheimer che proprio quelle chiese ha preso per oggetto del suo fondamentale Corpus edito da questo stesso Istituto. Gli Atti comprendono 90 comunicazioni di studiosi provenienti da oltre 10 paesi, tra i quali sono inclusi molti dei maggiori esperti mondiali dell’argomento. I contributi portano nuovi dati o interpretazioni su gran parte delle più importanti chiese urbane e suburbane soprattutto per il periodo paleocristiano e per gli aspetti storici, liturgici, topografici, architettonici, decorativi, iconografici, etc. Una sessione è dedicata anche alla figura e l’opera di R. Krautheimer. Va segnalata in particolare, all’interno del secondo volume, una sessione tematica dedicata alle basiliche circiformi che è stata seguita da una Tavola Rotonda sullo stesso tema. Le discussioni che hanno seguito ognuna delle 18 sessioni, con numerosissimi interventi, sono state anch’esse pubblicate integralmente.
The International Congress Ecclesiae Urbis, was held in the year 2000 as part of a series of about fifty Conferences organized for the celebration of the Iubilaeum A.D. 2000. As its object was the early christian and high-medieval churches of Rome, it was also dedicated to the late Richard Krautheimer who spent most of his academic life studying this subject (e.g.: the monumental Corpus Basilicarum Christianarum Romae, edited by this Institute). The three volumes published here contain 90 papers by world experts coming from more than 10 different countries. These deal with the majority of the urban and suburban churches of Rome, mostly of the early Christian period, and also discuss history, liturgy, topography, architecture, sculpture, painting, mosaics, etc. There is also one session dedicated to Richard Krautheimer himself and to his work on the churches of Rome. In the 2nd volume of particular interest is a thematic session, dedicated to the basilicas with absidal ambulatory (basiliche circiformi), which ended with a Round Table on the subject. The discussions that followed each session are published in full.
